Endoscopy & Rhinoscopy

An endoscopy is a less-invasive method of examining your pet’s digestive (GI) tract. The procedure involves the insertion of a flexible tube affixed with a camera, either through the mouth or colon. A Rhinoscopy involves the insertion of a very thin endoscope into the nasal cavity. Prior to an endoscopy procedure, your pet will need to fast and may need medication to empty the GI tract of all food and fecal matter. During either procedure, your pet will be under anesthesia. This is usually short-acting and, in most cases, our patients are able to go home the same day as the procedure.

Endoscopy is useful for:

  • Located/removing foreign objects/material
  • Evaluation of digestive-related symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.)
  • Detecting gastrointestinal tract cancer
  • Collecting biopsies of various GI components (stomach, intestines, etc.)
  • Placing feeding tubes

Rhinoscopy is useful because:

  • Rhinoscopy has distinct advantages over other examination techniques.
  • The sequence of rhinoscopic procedures is important for accurate diagnosis.
  • A complete diagnostic approach to nasal disease is indicated when a patient presents with chronic nasal discharge, intranasal obstruction, either acute and severe or chronic sneezing, epistaxis, or a facial deformity.

Radiography, or x-rays, are incredibly useful in our veterinary practice, as they allow our doctors to examine your pet’s internal organs and skeletal structures in a non-invasive manner.

At Quakertown Veterinary Clinic, we conduct X-rays in a variety of situations, including:

  • Determining if a bone is broken
  • Locating foreign objects in the stomach/abdomen
  • Finding intestinal obstructions
  • Diagnosing bladder stones
  • Detecting certain forms of cancer
  • Diagnosing orthopedic disorders, such as hip dysplasia
  • Identifying heart disease/lung disease
  • Determining if a female pet is pregnant
  • Examining abnormalities

This list is not exhaustive; our veterinarians may order x-rays to test for and/or diagnose a wide range of issues, diseases, and conditions. This is one of our most common and effective imaging services. Radiology specialists are available to us 24/7.

At Quakertown Veterinary Clinic, we also offer ultrasonography, or ultrasounds, for cats, dogs, horses and other pets. Though commonly associated with pregnancy, ultrasounds can be used to create images of the inside of a patient’s body in order to detect swallowed foreign objects, locate tumors, diagnose diseases, and identify abnormalities. Ultrasounds can also be used to diagnose certain heart diseases and conduct various emergency testing.
