I-131 Treatment for Hyperthyroid Cats

I-131 Radio Active Iodine Therapy Treatment to Cure Hyperthyroidism in Cats

What is the I-131 Feline Radio Active Iodine treatment?

A single injection of Radioiodine (I-131) that can cure Feline Hyperthyroidism cases without any adverse side effects.

What is involved in I-131 treatment?

Clients who are interested in I-131 treatment for their cat will need some lab work performed prior to the treatment. Their cat will need a CBC, Chemistry, T4 and Free T4. If you are coming to our facility from an outside veterinary hospital we will need a copy of your pet’s records. Your feline will stay in the hospital for 96 hours post injection. There is no visitation permitted during those 96 hours, for the safety of the owner. Each owner will be responsible for following an in-home protocol for the duration of two weeks. This will include keeping your cat separate from other cats in the home and wearing gloves while cleaning the litter pan. We will go over all post treatment instructions with you before the treatment takes place.

What are the benefits of I-131 treatment?

  • Cures hyperthyroidism
  • No Side Effects
  • Single Subcutaneous injection
  • Renal Hypertension and proteinuria resolve
  • Stops progression of renal disease
  • Longest survival
  • One-time expense (less expensive than long term use of medication or the Y/D diet)
  • Only effective treatment for cats with thyroid carcinoma

What is Feline Hyperthyroidism?
