Here at Quakertown Veterinary Clinic we are involved in numerous clinical drug studies in hopes of getting drugs approved by the FDA.   See below for current clinical trials (click here).

All drugs and medications have been through various laboratory studies and proven to be safe prior to coming to us. We participate in the final testing phase where the drug is administered on actual patients. The FDA sets specific guidelines that we must follow in order for them to properly analyze the effectiveness of the drug. Neither Quakertown Veterinary Clinic nor the sponsor company control the requirements needed for drug approval. Many of the drug trials provide free work ups such as free medication, free office visits and various other clinical procedures depending on what the study is based on. This is very beneficial for a family on a tight budget.

Owners are required to comply with study regulations. They may ask you to fill out a logbook, you may have to bring your animal to the clinic to get rechecked within a strict timeframe, etc.

For more information, and a complete list of current drug trials studies, please contact Donna Daniels or Dr. Sam Geller.

CURRENT CLINICAL TRIALS

I.  Canine Hypothyroid MedicationTrial

We are currently recruiting dogs newly diagnosed with hypothyroidism (low thyroid level) to participate in a trial with a widely used thyroid medication. The purpose of the study is to put an official FDA approved label on the medication.

All dogs in the trial will receive medication and owners will be required to maintain a daily log of dosing, exercise and food intake. Owners will also be required to bring their dog in for scheduled appointments.
Study participants will receive free bloodwork including thyroid tests, free office visits and free medication.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Dogs need to be diagnosed with a low thyroid.
  • Dogs must have dermatologic conditions such as hair loss, poor hair coat, skin scaling or have ear conditions.
  • Dogs need to currently have a low activity level.
  • Dogs cannot be receiving any thyroid medication, steroids, diuretics, phenobarb, propanolol or any over the counter NSAIDS (aspirin).

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact our Clinical Trials Department at 215-536-6245.

II.  Feline Renal MedicationTrial

We are currently recruiting cats diagnosed with kidney failure to participate in this clinical trial. This is a blinded placebo controlled study with some cats receiving placebo (will not receive medication) and being a blinded study it is not known which medication your cat will receive.

The medication is mixed into your cat’s wet food and will bind with the toxins your cat’s kidneys couldn’t filter. This will hopefully make your cat feel less nauseous, increase their appetite and improve their attitude.

Participating patients will receive free office visits, free blood work/urinalysis and free medication.

Owners will be expected to bring your cat in for approximately 5 visits and complete a daily logbook of all dosings.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Cats must be diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease.
  • Cats must be receiving some amount of wet food daily.
  • Cats will need to stay on the same brand of food throughout the study (flavor changes within that brand are ok).
  • If cats are receiving subcutaneous fluids, the dose must be stable.
  • Cats cannot be receiving Azodyl, Epakitin, prednisone, cyproheptadine, mirtazapine or procrit
  • Cats must have 2 of the following symptoms:
    • vomiting at least 4-6 times in the past 2 weeks;
    • have a decreased appetite (leaves food, reduced begging, requires coaxing);
    • have a slightly impaired attitude (decreased playing, less purring, less grooming, less interest in being with the family).
If you are interested in participating or if you have questions, please call our Clinical Trials Department at 215-536-6245.
